I founded Emma Lewisham to make a meaningful, lasting difference in the beauty industry.
We have a purpose and are driven by bringing about a meaningful, lasting difference in the beauty industry. We believe that natural skincare doesn’t have to come at a compromise to luxury and high performance and that sustainability and luxury can co-exist. Emma Lewisham proves this.
We believe the future of beauty needs to be 100% circular in design - core to drastically lowering carbon emissions and the 100 billion units of packaging that goes to landfill and our oceans annually.
The seeds of Emma Lewisham were sown when I uncovered a product I had been using for a personal skin issue (hyperpigmentation) contained an ingredient (hydroquinone) that, although effective, was shown to be toxic and banned in many countries for this reason. My doctor told me I should not use the product if I was planning on getting pregnant, which made me think, 'If I can't use it then, why would I use it now'.
Further research into this ingredient led me to uncover how unregulated the beauty industry is. Of the 82,000 ingredients used in personal care products, one in seven have been found to be industrial chemicals that are well-established carcinogens, pesticides, and hormone disruptors.
I went looking to replace this product with a natural alternative that didn’t compromise luxury or scientific-backed results – only to find it didn't exist. I was used to investing in high-performing, luxurious crèmes and serums that were scientifically validated. I went looking in skin clinics, and the leading beauty stores, asking for natural products with evidence based results. I wanted the La Mer of the natural world, but I found it didn't exist.
It also struck me how the beauty industry was contributing to many of the environmental issues we are facing today. The take-make-dispose of model was alarming to me, seeing billions of units being sent to landfill and our oceans every year and the single biggest contributor to carbon emissions. Somewhere along the way, that became an acceptable standard.
So I decided to be the change I wanted to see in the beauty industry. I took on the challenge to redefine standards for the beauty industry and prove it was possible to produce luxuriously natural skincare with scientific validated results, and to set a new sustainable standard at every step of the way. Today, Emma Lewisham proudly rivals the most recognised luxury brands in the world while being a global leader towards a circular beauty model.
At the beginning, this was unheard of. I built a team around me to concept our products, including three of the very best biochemists in the country. Together, we spent years researching, sourcing and testing the most potent and proven natural ingredients from around the globe. We worked with the latest science and innovations in the green skincare space (such as lipids, and plant stem cell technology) to outperform the most expensive products on the market, with only natural ingredients.
We developed our product line from scratch and approached natural skincare differently. We refused to compromise on using the synthetic preservative commonly used by natural brands in the industry, so we spent six months cracking the natural preservative code. Instead of using two or three hero ingredients, we use up to 30 high-performing natural ingredients and high concentrations – all of which uniquely work in synergy to strengthen results. We put quality and efficacy first, even when it is expensive and extremely hard to formulate. Cutting-edge natural and organic ingredients can be up to 16 times more expensive than synthetic ingredients and are significantly harder to formulate with. We never gave up in our pursuit for the most high performing natural skincare in the world.
Emma Lewisham does not use 2,700 ingredients that are deemed potentially harmful or unsustainable based on the framework of the EWG according to EWG's Skin Deep Database. We disclose every ingredient we use in our products and take ownership for understanding their source and if they were ethically and sustainably produced.
Emma Lewisham entered the market with our cult-status Skin Reset Concentrated Even Skin Tone Serum which is luxurious, naturally derived and scientifically tested and proven to outperform the most recognised and luxurious vitamin C and brightening products on the market.
It was the first confirmation that my ultimate goal of Uncompromising Skincare is not only possible, but – just maybe – the future.
I continue to be on a mission to make a meaningful, lasting difference in the beauty industry by setting a new benchmark through our natural skincare products and sustainability standards.
