The Anatomy of a Wrinkle

To understand how we can best prevent and reduce wrinkles, it’s important to first understand how they are created.

Skin aging is a multifaceted process influenced by a combination of factors, including genetics, intrinsic aging, and exposure to external elements. While skin structure and texture are primarily dictated by genetics, we can’t overlook the impact of intrinsic aging factors such as the diminishing production of natural oils, reduced synthesis of collagen and hyaluronic acid, and repetitive movements from facial expressions.

In addition, external factors such as exposure to UV rays, pollutants, and lifestyle choices such as smoking, further contribute to the deterioration of the skin's natural mechanisms that are responsible for strong and healthy skin.

“When degradation outpaces the production of these essential components, the skin gradually loses its structural integrity and moisture-retaining capacity, leading to the formation of wrinkles - marking the natural progression of aging.”

As we age, the effects of internal and external challenges accumulate and initiate three major shifts in how our skin functions that directly impacts the formation of wrinkles. These are:

1. A decline in the overall skin activity that once robustly facilitated the creation of collagen and hyaluronic acid (which give us supple, hydrated and plump skin);

2. An increase in activity of the processes responsible for the degradation of collagen and hyaluronic acid; and

3. A decline in our skin’s protective mechanisms which formerly shielded it from the impacts of external aggressors and internal challenges (such as the effects of UV rays and dehydration).

When degradation outpaces the production of these essential components, the skin gradually loses its structural integrity and moisture-retaining capacity, leading to the formation of wrinkles - marking the natural progression of aging.
