      Hyaluronic Acid 101

Hyaluronic acid is in many ways the golden child of skincare.

There are many different forms of hyaluronic acid, and you will more than likely find at least one of them included in your favourite skincare products. So, what is hyaluronic acid and why is it important to supplement it in your skincare?

      What is Hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar molecule found in the human body, predominantly in the skin, joints, muscles, and eyes. One of the main functions of hyaluronic acid is to retain water, keeping tissues well lubricated and moist.

Classified as a humectant, meaning it draws water into the skin, it is a crucial component for maintaining skin hydration and revealing a smooth and plump complexion. Hyaluronic acid works by capturing and retaining water molecules which act as mini reservoirs that hydrate the skin from the inside out. While hyaluronic acid is best known for its superior ability to hydrate the skin, it also plays a vital role in supporting collagen and elastin fibres, as well wound healing by controlling inflammation and redirecting blood flow to damaged tissue.

“Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar molecule found in the human body, predominantly in the skin, joints, muscles, and eyes. One of the main functions of hyaluronic acid is to retain water, keeping tissues well lubricated and moist.”

Why should I use Hyaluronic acid?
Our skin contains nearly 50% of the total hyaluronic acid in the body. However, as we age our natural production and levels of hyaluronic acid in the skin decreases (by an estimated 6% per decade). Several factors contribute to this natural hyaluronic acid decline, including genetic factors, environmental influences, as well as the natural aging process.

This reduction leads to increased dryness, diminished skin elasticity, and the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. As hydration is essential for optimal skin behaviour and health, it’s important to supplement our natural hyaluronic acid stores as we age, and we can effectively do this using topical, hyaluronic acid infused skincare.
