The Emma Lewisham Clean Standard™
The Emma Lewisham Clean Standard™
Clean for people and the planet
It is our mission to move beauty towards a transparent, clean, circular and regenerative model. We believe that you can make luxurious, efficacious products without compromising people or the planet for it. We only use ingredients that are verified as safe by the Environmental Working Group (EWG). In fact, we ban over 2,700 ingredients that are used in mainstream beauty products due to safety and sustainability reasons. We believe in full transparency so disclose all of our ingredients in our products.

Sunscreens made with the mineral zinc oxide score well in the EWG's (Environmental Working Group) ratings, because it provides strong sun protection with no health concerns. A number of companies sell products advertised as containing non-nano zinc oxide. These claims are generally misleading. Although particle sizes vary among manufacturers, nearly all would be considered nanomaterials under a broad definition of the term, including the one proposed in 2011 by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA 2011b).
Cruelty Free: PETA Certified
We firmly believe animal cruelty is more than just testing the finished beauty products on animals. Not only do we not test on animals (we are certified by PETA), we review every ingredient in our products, to ensure they are not tested on animals. We also are constantly reviewing ingredients we use to ensure that popularity and demand does not lead to deforestation and loss of animal life. This is the level of standard and definition we have for cruelty free.Find Out More
Supply Chain: Traceability and Transparency
We believe in full beauty transparency. There's a huge and very complex supply chain in beauty, and we review and take ownership for every aspect of it. We trace and disclose 100% of the ingredient we put into our products, every component of our packaging, where we source our ingredients from, and even where we need to improve and find solutions as a company.
We are focused on creating products that are safe for people and the planet. Our ingredients all go through a robust review process to ensure ingredients are: biodegradable, organic (where available), non GMO, cruelty free, child labour free, and are manufactured in a sustainable and preferably regenerative way.Find Out More

Our Achievements to Date
Our Results to Date
Sustainability and transparency are our north star, a beacon for the way we operate daily - it is not a one off project for us, it's engrained in our way of being and represented in every decision we make. The goals we have set and met, drive us and give us true purpose as a company.
Carbon Neutral Journey
We believe one of the biggest changes that we can make to have the most drastic and positive impact on our planet is to lower carbon emissions. We believe the circular beauty model is core to drastically lowering our carbon emissions as an industry. The other areas are understanding the carbon emission in respect to producing and manufacturing ingredients. When determining an ingredient, material for our packaging or how we produce our products, we ask "what is our carbon emissions here". Currently, in addition to moving our packaging to refillable options, we are working through measuring our carbon emissions at a product level. This entails looking at the ingredients sourced, understanding the manufacturing process of each ingredient, our bottles and boxes and the transportation to the customer. Once we understand this, we will be working to significantly reducing what we're emitting as a company – before we offset the rest to become carbon neutral.
Responsible Water Use
Responsible Water Use
The availability of clean, drinkable water is expected to nose dive by 2050 due to climate change, pollution and increased demand. We do not use water as a filler in our products and consider water usage across all aspects of our supply chain.Find Out More

A Truly Beautiful Beauty Industry
The beauty industry has become notorious as a huge contributor to environmental and social issues globally. From disrupting ecosystems and depleting non-renewable natural resources, to excessive water consumption and pollution, to the treatment of animals, to greenhouse gas emissions from supply chains, to the billions of units of packaging produced and ending up in landfills and our oceans each year.
The natural beauty trend has increased demand on natural ingredients. When produced mindlessly, the use of natural ingredients in beauty products on a large scale, such as mining of minerals and of petroleum-based products, disrupts ecosystems and depletes non-renewable natural resources.
There are also the non-natural ingredients to consider. The use of chemical components in products that don’t break down and instead accumulate in our ecosystems. Traditional cosmetics and toiletries do the most damage to the environment once they are washed away down our sinks. From our sinks, the chemicals are released into our lakes, streams, rivers and public water systems, damaging wildlife and flora and fauna.
It is also important to consider the packaging element of the cosmetics industry. Zero Waste reports that more than 120 billion units of packaging are produced every year by the global cosmetics industry – the majority of it is not recycled. If this level of consumption continues, by 2050 there will be 12 billion tonnes of plastic in landfills, the equivalent to 35,000 Empire State Buildings.
The UN has declared our current situation a ‘planetary crisis’. The current model of beauty is broken. It’s an unsustainable model for our planet and as an industry we need to change the way we operate, and fast.
Emma Lewisham is leading skin care into a new age: one that prioritises product efficacy without compromising people or the planet for it. Our single purpose is changing the industry for the better. We have an ambitious goal to transform the industry to one that respects people’s health, is transparent, circular and regenerative.
We still have a lot of work to do, obstacles to overcome and problems to solve, but we are so proud of what we have already achieved and have proven the "impossible" in beauty is possible. We want to give people hope that there is another way – that beauty doesn’t have to come at a compromise to people or the planet. We believe through building and proving a new model, we will pave the way for others to join us, bringing about a truly, beautiful beauty industry.
