From the beginning we set out to redefine beauty, to lead beauty into a new age: to prove that high performance and natural and luxury and sustainability can co-exist.
"We’ve been conditioned to think that high performance needs to comes from man-made synthetics — when actually the highest performing, cutting-edge ingredients come from the complex natural world" – Emma Lewisham
When customers buy Emma Lewisham they're getting products that deliver proven, visible results, whilst being 100% naturally derived and from a brand that truly is here to make a meaningful difference.
We only use ingredients that are verified by the Environmental Working Group (EWG). We do not use 2,700 ingredients that are in line with the EWG’s guidelines and are harmful or suspected to be harmful to human health.
All of our ingredients meet the EWG standard - as this is something we look at during the process of developing our products, but in order to be EWG certified brands must disclose every component of their fragrance. The French perfume house we work with is not willing to provide us with all the components of our fragrance to disclose to EWG, out of fear that the fragrances are then easy to copy.
As of January 2021, this has been a major hurdle for us, and something we are trying to overcome with the perfumery. We feel it's important you understand some of the challenges we face in our endeavours to set a new standard in beauty. We assure you that 100% of our fragrances are from France and are created with ingredients that are COSMOS NATURAL certified. We do not blend our fragrance with synthetics.
The botanicals we use are extracted using CO2 supercritical extraction, one of the cleanest and purest ways of obtaining extracts and actives.
All Emma Lewisham products are vegan except for our SPF range, which contain mindfully sourced beeswax (cera alba) from bees which are unharmed.
Every Emma Lewisham ingredient is not only chosen for its results but whether the supplier treats people and the planet with fairness and respect, this process is incredibly time consuming, and one that is ongoing for us as a company, but we are absolutely committed to asking the hard questions of our suppliers and walking away from even the most efficacious ingredients. We now have 100% traceability of our ingredients and in 2021 we will be working through reviewing everyone of our farms’ labour and environmental practices.
We will keep you updated.
Paraben & Phenoxyethanol Free: Parabens are preservatives used in cosmetics. We do not use any parabens or synthetic preservatives in our skin care products. The preservative phenoxyethanol is associated with a growing number of skin allergies and health issues including respiratory and skin problems such as contact dermatitis and worsening of eczema, reproductive toxicity in adults, neurotoxicity, as well as nervous system issues in infants. We use natural preservatives - something we “cracked” working with our very talented scientists in 2018.
Artificial Preservative Free: Emma Lewisham pioneers the use of biodynamic and organic plant-based ingredients in the personal care industry. Instead of synthetic preservatives, we use grain alcohol, pure plant extracts and essential oils to maintain the life of our products.
Sodium-Laurel-Sulfate (SLS) Free: These substances provide the foaming and degreasing effect of products such as shampoo, facial cleanser and shower gel. The disadvantage is that they can easily dissolve natural skin oils. Therefore, the barrier function of the skin can be disrupted, causing irritation and drying. You will not find Sodium-Laurel-Sulfate (SLS) in any of our skin care products, instead we use natural plant-based surfactants.
Artificial Fragrance Free: Artificial fragrances are used by some manufacturers because they are cheaper than natural perfumes. One of the key characteristics of Emma Lewisham skin care products is that we only use high-quality, natural raw materials for our fragrances. The connection to nature and the use of authentic plant fragrances is essential to our products.
Phthalate Free: In skin care products phthalates are often used as a stabiliser for synthetic perfumes. Unfortunately, companies are not obligated to mention them in the list of ingredients as perfume is considered a 'proprietary' ingredient. We only use natural essential oils in our products.
